Rene Lorente was born in Havana, Cuba. At 12 years old, he learned to play the 5-key wooden flute from master flutist Antonio Arcaño. At 14, he already performed professionally at parties with local orchestras. To complete his musical knowledge, he entered the Alejandro Garcia Caturla Conservatory where he studied the System Böehm flute with master flutist Alfredo Portela. His style and quality as a flutist in his interpretation of the Son, the Guaracha, the Danzon and the Chachacha at such a young age allowed him to join in 1969 the America Orchestra of Ninon Mondejar (where violinist Enrique Jorrin created his Chachacha in the 1950’s decade) and where he remained for 11 years. In 1980 he joined the Senen Suarez Combo. During this period, he replaced eventually flutist Miguel O’Farrill in the Enrique Jorrin Orchestra when they performed at the Cabaret Show of the Capri Hotel. In the mid the 1970 decade, Rafael Lay, the Director of the Aragon Orchestra, saw in Lorente, and discussed with him, his possible eventual replacement in the orchestra. It was not until 1984, that he replaced master flutist Richard Egües, and this became one of Lorente’s most important achievements. Rene Lorente joined the Aragon Orchestra without previous rehearsal and he mastered the wide repertoire of the famous Charanga. This was perhaps the best replacement of a musician of the caliber of Richard Egües and allowed Rene Lorente to become a part of the Cuban music history. From his perticipation in great Cuban orchestras mention can be made of an LP with The America, another with Senen Suarez and five with the Aragon. In August 1990, while still a member of the Aragon, he moved to the United States and after a short time creates his own Charanga orchestra with which he remained until 1995 when he decided to change the course of his artistic career. Since then he has acted as a soloist, where the flute sings and inspires at the same time. With contemporary arrangements without losing the melodious seal and direction he has been able to conduct he 5-key Wooden Flute towards a different language using new resources and combining with his personal way of playing the System Böehm flute, with which he is able to achieve the same rich and expressive intensity. Rene Lorente is capable of alternating both types of flutes during the same performance, thus establishing his personality as a soloist. During his career in the United States, he has also devoted his time to carry out out his own individual discographic production: “ Rene Lorente y su Charanga Cubana”. “Wood and Metal”, “Concept in Flute” (Hamelin Records). For two years he belonged to the group of the “Café Nostalgia” in Miami, gathering group of famous personalities due to its jam sessions.Together with his work as soloist, during the last 7 years he has acted as flutist in the group of the pianist Enrique Chia and has participated in discographic productions of other artists, such as Hansel, Juanito Marquez, Juan Pablo Torres, Fred Paul (CD series “Haitiando”), the Café Nostalgia Group and Enrique Chia. He has performed in different European, Latin America and United States stages where his sui generis interpretation of Cuban music has been recognized by specialized critics.
