We have been asked many times, what does OPA OPA mean?
Well, the word OPA comes from the Greek language and it means HELLO! WELCOME! HOLA!
Opa Opa is a Los Angeles based band that was created in 1987 by Oswaldo Bernard and his good friend Anthony Apollo. They set out to use their musical talent honed since their childhood to create a band that would have a unique and distinctive sound – rich percussive rhythms, remarkably unique sounding vocals and robust brassy horns, these elements have contributed greatly to the powerful sound that identifies Opa-Opa
OPA OPA is made up of a diverse group of musicians. They come from all around the world and each adds their own special flare and flavor to the to the band’s sound…
During the late 80’s and early 90’s the band blossomed to be one of the premiere salsa bands in Los Angeles where they were discovered by the very talented producer Erich Bulling who signed the band to a recording contract with Warner.
The outcome was the release of Opa Opa ‘s first album titled “Mojaditicos”.
Opa Opa has had the privilege to share stage with some of the major recording artists from around the world, Celia Cruz, Willie Colon, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, La Sonora Ponceña, Oscar de Leon, Daniel Santos, Willie Chirino, Johnny Rey, Grupo Niche, Guayacan, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Ruben Blades, Charlie Palmieri, Poncho Sanchez, and many other great artists.
They have performed in many clubs and major venues in the Los Angeles area.
With the release of the new CD “Los Paisajes” (DG Music/ Universal), the band hopes to share their unique style of music with the rest of the tropical music loving world.
“Los Paisajes” has 10 songs of which Oswaldo Bernard wrote five, he also arranged most of the tracks and was the Executive Producer and producer of the project.
To insure he was getting the best salsa sound, Oswaldo went to Puerto Rico and enlisted the talents of arrangers Eric Figueroa and Isidro Infante, Trombone player Jorge Diaz.
The record was mixed in Puerto Rico by Rei Peña ( Who recorded and mixed greats like Gilberto Santa Rosa, Willie Rosario, and others) and engineer Willie Sotelo ( Who is very well known as the M.D. for Frankie Ruiz and Roberto Roena). The first single “El Huequito” is an up tempo tongue & cheek fun danceable song that the band feels will be very well received. The title track “Los Paisajes” is a song that all expatriated people will identify with since it talks about missing your native country.

Mucho nos han preguntado, que significa Opa-Opa ? Bien!! La palabra Opa, viene del idioma Griego y significa HELLO! BIENVENIDO! HOLA!
Opa-Opa es una banda de musica tropical y esta basada en Los Angeles, California. Fue fundada en 1987 por Oswaldo Bernard y su buen amigo Anthony Apollo. Su meta es, utilizar su talento musical,que vienen cultivando desde su niñez, para formar una banda de sonido propio y poderoso, con el sonido exotico de la percussion, una combinacion de voces extraordinarias y unos metales robustos y sonoros, los cuales son caracteristicas que hacen que Opa-Opa tenga un sonido agradable y distintivo.
Opa-Opa esta compuesto por musicos de varios paises y cada uno trae sus propias caracteristicas lo cual hace posible abarcar todos los ritmos de Latinoamerica y mas.
A finales de los años 80 y principios de los 90 Opa-Opa fue reconocido como una de las mejores bandas de Los Angeles, lo cual llamo la atencion del productor Erich Bulling, quien los firmo a un contrato de grabacion con la Warner bros. El resulatado fue el lanzamiento del primer disco titulado “Mojaditicos”.

Opa-Opa ha tenido el privilegio de compartir la tarima con muchos artistas de renombre internacional, tales como: Celia Cruz, Willie Colon, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, La Sonora Ponceña, Oscar de Leon, Daniel Santos, Willie Chirino, Johnny Rey, Grupo Niche, Guayacan, Gilberto Santarosa, Ruben Blades, Charlie Palmieri, Poncho Sanchez, y muchos mas. Se han presentado en clubes y hotels de alto prestigio en el area de Los Angeles California.
Con el lanzamiento del Nuevo C.D. “Los Paisajes” ( DG Music/Universal), la banda espera compartir su extraordinario estilo musical con el resto del mundo que gusta de la musica tropical. “ Los Paisajes” tiene 10 canciones de las cuales Oswaldo Bernard es el autor de cinco, y tambien arreglo otras sies de ellas, participo como productor, y productor ejecutivo del proyecto. Para asegurarse de obtener el major sonido possible, Oswaldo viajo a Puerto Rico y recluto los talentos de arreglistas como Eric Figueroa e Isidro Infante,y los solos del trombonista Jorge Diaz., em “ Canto a Limon “ Y en la “Descarga Opa-Opa “. “ Los Paisajes” fue mezclado en Puerto Rico por el conocido ingeniero Rei Peña ( Quien ha mezclado para grandes como Gilberto Santa Rosa y Willie Rosario, entre otros) y el Ingeniero Willie Sotelo ( Conocido por su trabajo com M.D. de Frankie Ruiz y Roberto Roena). El primer sencillo “ El Huequito” es una cancion muy divertida, con un ritmo sabroso y bailable y la banda siente que sera muy bien recibida por los bailadores y el publico en general. La cancion “ Los Paisajes” que es el titulo del disco, es una cancion muy especial ya que se refiere a las personas que estan furea de su patria y que sienten la nostalgia por su tierra natal.
