Hi
Melanie, here's Pietro from Italy. I’d like to have a “special
bio”, only for vinilemania, about you and Sal… your story and your
future projects…. Just I'll receive it... you'll have a surprise
:-))
Hi
Sweetie,
Well, I just wrote you one because I LOVE surprises. Especially
good surprises. And since I teach young musicians how to write
their own bios, I better be able to write one quick for Sal and I.
So here is a bio written for you. I hope you like it.
I send you a big hug, Melanie
Biography of
Sal Cracchiolo and Melanie Jackson
Sal
Cracchiolo and Melanie Jackson first met each other at a, now
defunct, jazz club in Hollywood called “The Vine Street Bar and
Grill”. Sal was playing there with Poncho Sanchez and Melanie was
coming in to firm up a date for a future performance there.
There was a lot of chemistry from the moment Sal said hello and
touched Melanie's hand so gently. That night in June of 1989 gave
birth to a 16-year marriage and a collaboration of romance and music
that have spawned a Latin Grammy nominated CD, compositions and
performances of the two of them together ever since.
Sal
has performed on numerous albums, including 16 albums with the
Poncho
Sanchez Latin Jazz Band, 1 album with jazz legend
Bobby Shew, and 1 album with Brian Setzers Big Band, to mention
a few. He has also toured worldwide with
Poncho
Sanchez for 16 years. He has played with Dizzy
Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Cal Tjader, Stanley Turentine, Tito
Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Gary Foster, Arturo Sandoval, Eddie
Harris, and Celia Cruz. He has performed for and with these
artists at the Monterey, Playboy, Concord, and Nice Jazz
Festivals plus many others throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada,
Mexico, South America and Japan. In addition, he has also played
on such movie soundtracks as The Mambo Kings, The HBO Cinema
Latin Session, and A Million to Juan. Sal is currently working
with the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, with John Clayton,
Jeff Hamilton and Jeff Clayton as leaders.
They just finished performing at The Kennedy Center in
Washington D.C., giving Lifetime Achievement awards to such
artists as Benny Golson, James Moody, Nancy Wilson, Gerald
Wilson, Clark Terry, and many others. The Clayton Hamilton Jazz
Orchesstra will be backing Diana Krall in Las Vegas this summer,
and will be touring Europe in November of 2007.
Melanie received her Bachelor's degrees in Music and Journalism
from the University of California and a the same time was rated
L.A.'s fourth best local jazz act by Music Connection magazine
in 1979. In 1980 she moved to New York and sang with various big
bands, performing at The Cookery and Michaels Pub. Later she
moved back to L.A. and headed for the studio, recording
commercials and television network promos. She has toured as a
background vocalist throughout the United States, Europe,
Canada, the Caribbean, South America and Japan, working with
such acts as REO Speedwagon, Latin artist Jose Luis Rodriguez on
CBS International, and Leonard Cohen.
Their debut album “Fly” was recorded in three days, live. The
day after they wrapped up in December of 1999, Sal and Melanie
flew to Rome to perform with a 90 voice choir and 120 piece
orchestra for Pope John Paul II for the opening of the Holy
Doors an the Jubileo of 2000 at the Vatican on Christmas Day,
1999. When they came back, they performed for the Playboy Jazz
Festival's community concerts, The Vancouver Jazz Festival (Rossini's
Jazz Club) and various popular jazz clubs in Southern
California. In 2002, “Fly” was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
In 2004, the California Arts Council sponsored Sal and Melanie.
January 2006, Sal and Melanie flew to Bangkok, Thailand to
perform for the American School of Bangkok in a tribute to the
King of Thailand and to raise money for the tsunami victims.
This year, Sal and Melanie were flown to Bangkok again to
perform the H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and also at
the Thai Cultural Arts Center with Benny Goodman's trombonist,
Urbie Green and members of Maynard Ferguson's big band to
celebrate the King's 60 year reign of Thailand.
Melanie and Sal have also been teaching. Sal is a mentor
with the Los Angeles Jazz Society and is an instructor for the
Monterey Jazz Festival summer camps for youth. Melanie is an
adjunct professor at Santa Ana College and teaches Jazz History,
and a Music Business class. They are both members of the
International Association for Jazz Education.
Melanie has currently been collaborating lyrically with
Mark Levine
(The Latin Tinge). Sal and Melanie will be recording their next
Latin Jazz CD later this year. They are also planning on doing
a Big Band CD for Sal for his jazz clinics.
