FLUTIST, COMPOSER, ARRANGER official website - myspace page - blog
Thank you Pietro for the opportunity to introduce myself on your wonderful web page. My career began as a trombone player in Eddie Palmieri’s legendary La Perfecta playing trombone alongside Barry Rogers. In 1967 I released Cuban Roots, generally recognized as one of the most important albums in the development of Latin Jazz. Chick Corea played on the album, which was the first time that jazz was played with rumba and toques de Santo. I stopped playing trombone and began playing flute in the 1970’s. I also earned a Ph.D in Philosophy and have been teaching at the University ever since. In the 1990’s I began to record seriously and have recorded over a dozen albums with some of the greatest world musicians playing today. Among these recordings are three Brazilian recordings (Jazz World Trios, Tudo de Bom and O Nosso Amor) featuring guitarist Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta on bass and Paul Braga on drums. Jazz World Trios also included my next attempt at Afro Cuban Jazz and lead to three albums, Cuban Roots Revisited, Algo Mas and my latest recording Con Alma. Among the great musicians on these albums are percussionists Francisco Aguabella, Milton Cardona and Pedrito Martinez, guitarist Jean Paul Bourelly and pianists Omar Sosa and Mark Levine. My latest release, Con Alma on Jazzhead records, moves from my previous focus on folkloric material to mainstream Latin Jazz. Along with Santi Debriano on bass, Mark Levine and I play Latin Jazz classics, by Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. The rhythm section of Pedrito Martinez and Mauricio Herrera has got to be heard to be believed. I have also recorded music from my own Jewish Ukrainian heritage (Shifra Tanzt and Milling Time). And had the opportunity to record an album in Berlin with African musicians that features Aly Keita on ballafon. Jean Paul Bourelly and Omar Sosa are also on this magical recording, soon to be released. I just finished a ‘straight ahead’ recording with guitarist Dave Stryker, drummer Victor Lewis and Ed Howard on bass. After recording so much world jazz it was a pleasure and challenge to play in the mainstream of New York post-bebop. But world music has its allure and so I am back in the studio with the finest Brazilian musicians I know, my good friend and co-producer Nilson Matta on bass, Romero Lubambo on guitar and the amazing percussionist Cyro Baptista.

An all star rhythm section gives Mark what he needs to play jazz classics and original compositions. Playing concert, alto and bass flutes Mark demonstrates once again that in his hands the flute can do it all.
