THE LADY AND THE LEGEND

Who is "The Lady"? Lionel Hampton "discovered" Sylvia Bennett at an audition in Miami arranged by mutual acquaintances in the early 1980's. You might say the audition went even better than expected when Lionel hired Ms. Bennett on the spot to appear with his band at the Konover Hotel and then asked her to accompany him on a tour of Florida. That auspicious beginning led to a continuing relationship which included appearances with Lionel at the Inaugurations of Presidents Reagan and Bush, as well as multiple national venues, and culminated with the recording of two albums. The first album, titled Sentimental Journey, was immediately picked up by Atlantic Records and received a Grammy nomination in 1987. The second album, titled There Will Never Be Another You, is now brought forward by Ms. Bennett as a tribute to the Jazz Legend and "National Treasure," whom she so admired and respected.

ABOUT THE ALBUM

After receiving the Grammy nomination for Sentimental Journey on Atlantic Records, Lionel Hampton Giant of the jazz world and king of the vibraphone, recorded a second album with Sylvia Bennett in 1989. Because of the intimate setting of the "home studio" in Miami where the vibes were set up, Lionel felt very comfortable, relaxed, and spontaneous which led to one of his best studio performances ever.

The significance and excitement of this project is that it is a totally new and unreleased Lionel Hampton recording that contains cover tunes and four new songs. This major work is a modern pop jazz recording that represents Lionel's innovative side, including his signature rapid two-finger piano playing. The work includes a dance mix of You Make My Heart Sing that appeals to the dance set as well as the jazz and pop audiences here and worldwide.

The work is titled There Will Never Be Another You, to pay tribute to the man who contributed so much over so many years to music and society. This work honors Lionel Hampton and allows his old and new fans to experience his brilliance as an artist and innovator.
