Mention the name Humberto Ramírez to Latin Jazz fans, and it’s his virtuous, hard bop rooted skill as a trumpet soloist and leader of the innovative Jazz Project that will quickly come to mind. Aficionados of contemporary tropical Latin dance music will instantly recognize his contributions as an arranger, composer and producer for such tropical music icons as Willie Colón, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tony Vega, Marc Anthony, Olga Tañon, Domingo Quiñones, India, Rubén Blades, Victor Manuelle and a multitude of other salsa luminaries. He brings to Latin Jazz the very best of many different musical genres to create a unique style.Ramírez grew up in a household steeped in the music of Tito Rodríguez, Machito, Tito Puente, Miles Davis, Lee Morgan and John Coltrane. His father, a saxophonist and bandleader, inspired a young Humberto to take up the flugelhorn at age 11. By the age 14, Humberto was performing professionally with his father’s band. By 19, his interest in composition and arranging led him to Berkley College of Music in Boston and later on to Los ángeles to attend the Dick Grove School of Music. Since then, Ramírez has shared the stage with great Jazz star such as: Freddy Hubbard, Justo Almario, Alex Acuña, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Tito Puente, Michel Camilo, Herbie Hancock, Eddie Gómez and Herb Alpert with whom he recorded the album Passion Dance, as well as joining him on Alpert’s 1997 world tour.Humberto has received several Grammy nominations for his production work including Willie Rosario’s 1986 album “Nueva Cosecha”. Others nominations are Willie Colón 1993 album “Hecho en Puerto Rico”, Tony Vega album titled “Tony Vega” in 1996 and Olga Tañon Grammy winning album “Olga Viva, Viva Olga” in 2001. Humberto’s proven ear for popular music has established him as one of the most active producers and arrangers in the industry.His music has received unprecedented attention from major newspapers and music journals including: Down Beat, Jazz Times, New York Daily News, The Plain Dealer, CD Review, Latin Beat, Miami Herald, Jazziz, The Boston Globe, Austin Chronicle and Hispanic Magazine. Other award includes: Six Platinum Records, Twelve Gold Records for his production work, Four Visionary Award, One Ampex Golden Reel Award and Nine “Tu Música” Award. Humberto also had the honor of entertaining President Bill Clinton at Washington in 1997.After receiving many award and nominations, as well recording his own successful projects, Humberto shows that his creative explosion has just begun. His music is a portrait of Latin Jazz roots, its place in the music world today and what the future holds for the genre.
