HATUEY (SALSA / TIMBA BAND)
Hatuey is a Swedish
group devoted to music from Cuba and other Caribbean islands. The
group was formed in 1987 and blends modern finely honed salsa with
its muddy roots. There is a lot of variety and the rhythm is
irresistible. Perfect suggestive dance music.
After the first record "Songo Mondongo" Hatuey was invited to play
at the Jazz Plaza Festival 1991 in Havanna Cuba. The success was
both great and astounding in front of 2000 Cubans at the Teatro
Karlos Marx. Special guest on ”Songo Mondongo” is the legendary Bebo
ValdÈs on piano. Hatueys second album "La Leyenda" from 1992
received overflowing reviews in the Latin Beat Magazine, Max Salazar
wrote "La Leyenda is arousing. You may find it difficult to believe
that Swedish musicans are on the session. It¥s the type of recording
you can listen to forever, it¥s a royal jewel. I assure you once you
hear La Leyenda, you will never be the same". In 1998 Hatuey
released "El Baile de la Paz", in the album notes Bebo ValdÈs wrote
”I think this new Hatuey recording is fantastic. A collective work
from an incredible tight group of musicians”.
Hatuey has been touring clubs and festivals all over Europe, always
met by very enthusiastic audiences. The members of the group comes
from Sweden, Cuba and Venezuela.
The name Hatuey originates from a brave Indian chief who, in the
16th century, fought against the Spanish conquistadores. It is also
the name of a very tasty Cuban beer.
