AZUQUITA (SALSA SINGER) Straight from Panama: The legendary sweet salsa melodies of Azuquita Originally from Panama, Azuquita fell in love with salsa and relocated to Puerto Rico where he learned the intricacies of salsa from the legendary sonero (singer) Ismael Rivera. Not one to remain still in one place, Azuquita soon made his way to New York City were he quickly became an essential member of the Fania family. Named Azuquita (Sugar) because of his sweet voice- Camilo “Azuquita” Argumedes was known as the man that brought tenderness and sweetness to salsa. More than gifted singer, Azuquita was also an exceptional composer responsible for some of the most beautiful and original compositions in the tradition of Caribbean music. His innovative songs like the gorgeous El Tranquilo (The Quiet One) and the spectacular California prove that Azuquita well deserved his sugary moniker. After breaking into the charts with his record Pura Salsa (Pure Salsa), Azuquita toured the world and became an international ambassador for Afro-Caribbean music. His ceaseless touring was responsible for bringing the New York salsa sound to far and away places were people had not heard salsa before. Loved everywhere around the world, Azuquita is particularly famous in Europe, where he experienced the great honor of opening for reggae icon Bob Marley during his 1981 Paris tour. The honeyed flavors of Azuquita can now be fully appreciated in a series of limited edition re-mastered recordings of Azuquita’s classic Fania catalog.
