SEBASTIAN SCHUNKE - MOUVEMENT (2004)

Another fantastic record by
Schunke, a German pianist who
has wedded the ECM cool with Cuban music and produced a surprisingly
successful merger. Mouvement brings together Cuban music, European
jazz-chill piano with early Miles Davis electronica and a bit of Kip
Hanrahan -- there's a Cuban woman, Olvido Castellanos, who sings and
talks through some of the album. The group, which includes Felipe
Carera on bass, El Indio on trumpet, Lukmil Herrera on drums plus
others--works with scraps of music; the band swells the music, and
shrinks it down to silence. The bass starts moving with an ostinato,
the woman whispers, a guitar (sounding like early John McLaughlin)
sears the accompaniment, and the music takes off again.
