Another fine record from the front lines of Latin jazz.
Schunke,
a pianist, has assembled a group of the best young Latin jazz
musicians, including John Benitez on bass, the percussionists
Dafnis Prieto,
Richie Flores and Antonio Sanchez and the saxophonists Yosvany Terry
and Peter Brainin. It's cool music, informed by Schunke's classical
background; the music doesn't quite sound like anything in the more
distant past. Touches of Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea show up in
the pianistic compositions; the percussion and saxophones make it
all sound modern, without precedent. It's often beautiful and
introspective. It's always thoughtful and a welcome addition to the
growing list of albums that are defining a new age in both jazz and
Latin music.
