If
great things are worth waiting for then this soulful almost
mesmerizing, project proves it. It's not often that a new Rumba
Calzada is released. In fact this is just their third CD in thirteen
years. Timbalero-percussionist Raphael Geronimo has created a
sophisticated vibes and trombone-based salsa that leads to deep
atmospheric descargas. The sound, full of soul and dimension, feels
almost vintage. Perhaps that's not exactly right: it sounds...
almost familiar — as if you were privy to some platonic ideal of
salsa-descarga jams. You hear it and it sounds "right". Listen to "Cuidado
Rene", an almost dreamlike drive into waves of Afro Cuban rhythmic
grace. Flawless? Damn close, 'cause there's a capacious dose of
sabor in these eight original tracks. Geronimo tries hard not to
shine the light too bright; he knows that the beauty, the sensual,
live in the shadows.
