Review by Paul J. Youngman - KJA Advocate for WWW.VINILEMANIA.NET A smooth, easy listening, Latin jazz groove takes flight from track one, “Movin’ On” of the Mistura CD, Coast to Coast and becomes more motivated as the recording progresses through the seven tracks that make up the CD. The final four tracks were recorded live and as such have some inspired moments of musical freedom that take the tunes from slightly over ten minutes in length to over seventeen minutes with the song “The Mystical Land” and the albums title track “Coast to Coast,” which appears twice, one studio version and the aforementioned extended live version. Rowland Sutherland, leader of the band Mistura, composer, arranger, educator and flautist has a lot of experience in a diverse number of musical genre’s. When you mix and blend some Brazilian, Latin, funk, African rhythms, straight ahead jazz phrasing and flute playing as one who has a solid classical foundation, what you get is an outstanding quality performance of high energy, earth moving, listening pleasure, this is Coast to Coast. The studio version of the Sutherland composition, “Coast to Coast” starts with a Brazilian flavour, berimbau introduces the percussion section and fantastic percussion work ensues by Richard Ajileye, the song starts at the coast of southern Brazil and travels through Bahia, to land on the northeast of Salvador in fine festival fashion. The trombone playing of Fayyaz Virji firmly takes the position of a jazz stylist and lays down inspirational fills that open up the song for a fine piano break by Mark Donlon. The song features some hot blowing by Mr. Sutherland, playing in a low tone, alto flute, he creates a storm of emotion as the festival atmosphere comes to a glorious close. There’s some excellent playing by these gifted U.K based musicians, letting loose on the live sessions, high-light trombone work by Virji, as well as Joe De Jesus who plays on the live version of “Coast to Coast.” There is limited information as to when, where or how the live work was accomplished but it would seem the venues were different as the line up changes for the various performances. Also worth mentioning, the trumpet and flugelhorn work of Kevin Robinson on “Lilting” and Byron Wallen on “Coast to Coast.”
