review by Pietro Carbognani for WWW.VINILEMANIA.NET “En Grande y En Vivo” is the title of the first DVD by Ralph Irizarry & Son Cafè. With a running time of around one hour the DVD (in English with subtitles in Spanish) starts off with a series of video clips that tell, in small doses, the principal turning points in the musical career of Ralph Irizarry. Discovered by the legendary Ray Barretto at the end of the 70’s, Ralph entered into Ruben Blades’ group, in 1983, Seis del Solar until, in 1996, when he formed his own Latin jazz group (Timbalaye) to arrive today with his actual group “Son Cafè”. The DVD exhibits a live performance by Ralph Irizarry and his actual group in a famous New York location. A total of nine pieces are included (the initial four taken from the first CD “Bailando con Azucar” and the other five from the second CD “Tributo”) that, under the musical direction of Richie Viruet, trumpeter, are perfectly executed by the orchestra. The voice of Jorge Maldonado alternates between pieces with that of the warm and sensual voice of Elsa Ozuna which gives the best of itself in the medley dedicated to Lupe (my personal favourite). The wind instruments are entrusted to the previously cited Richie Viruet (fantastic in the cha cha cha) and to the great Manuel Ruiz. An optimal Arturo Ortiz let’s loose with his piano in the number dedicated to Charlie Palmieri while the congas of Richy Salas are played brilliantly (a great solo in “Fascinate con mi Tumbao”). Ray Martinez is impeccable on the bass and a great Ralph Irizarry on the timbales shows proof of his capabilities in the number dedicated to Tito Puente - “Curando se hable”. Towards the end of a few numbers there are some welcomed historical comments by Ralph Irizarry that contribute in making this DVD a more pleasurable viewing and listening experience hence making it a DVD to recommend.

Della durata complessiva di circa un ora il DVD (in lingua inglese con la possibilità dei sottotitoli in spagnolo) inizia con una serie di mini videoclips che raccontano, in sommi capi, le principali tappe della carriera musicale di Ralph Irizarry. Scoperto dal leggendario Ray Barretto alla fine degli anni ’70, Ralph entrò a far parte, nel 1983, del Seis Del Solar di Ruben Blades fino a costituire, nel 1996, il suo primo gruppo di latin jazz (Timbalaye) per arrivare ai nostri giorni con il suo attuale gruppo i Son Cafè. Il DVD propone la performance live di Ralph Irizarry e il suo attuale gruppo in un famoso locale di New York. Nove in totale i brani proposti (i primi quattro tratti dal primo CD “Bailando con Azucar” e i rimanenti cinque dal secondo CD “Tributo”) che sotto la direzione musicale del trombettista Richie Viruet vengono perfettamente eseguiti dall’ Orchestra. La voce di Jorge Maldonado si alterna in alcuni brani con quella calda e sensuale di Elsa Ozuna che da il meglio di se nel medley dedicato alla Lupe (il mio preferito). I fiati sono affidati al già citato Richie Viruet (fantastico nel cha cha cha) e al bravo Manuel Ruiz. Un ottimo Arturo Ortiz si scatena con il suo piano nel brano dedicato a Charlie Palmieri mentre le congas di Richy Salas suonano sempre alla grande (bello il suo solo in “Fascinate con mi Tumbao”). Impeccabile Ray Martinez al basso e un grande Ralph Irizarry ai Timbales dà prova delle sue capacità nel brano dedicato a Tito Puente “Cuando se hable”. Verso il finale di alcuni brani ci sono dei graditi commenti storici di Ralph Irizarry che contribuiscono a rendere ulteriormente piacevole la visione e l’ascolto di questo DVD tanto da renderne consigliato l’acquisto.
