Poleo,
a congero from Venezuela comes out with his fourth recording, and
it’s a beast of a salsa project. The conguero has spent years in
Paris, fronting a band from all over the place; Curate takes him
back to Venezuela, and joins him up with Changuito and "El Negro"
Hernandez. Oscar D’Leon sings a bit too, and the whole thing is hard
salsa, with an international overlay, glittering with bits from
Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. In that sense the project is
futuristic, suggesting that the Caribbean is a Diaspora. There are
elements of bata drumming, and good singing, and fantastic
arrangements for the horns and the rhythm section; the Venezuelan
arranger Alfredo Naranjo helps out. The rhythm section breaks up
time beautifully, and the whole project just swings and swings and
you want it to last all night. Another great recording from the
Venezuelan/New York label Cacao.
