NEIL C. YOUNG - MY CRAZY PONY EP (2007) Jazz Guitarist using a raw combination of expression and technique Neil C. Young (Guitars, Guitar synth Bass Guitar) Richard Young (Drum Set) All titles written by Neil C. Young more tracks can be heard on Vinilemania's Radio Channels
Review by Paul J. Youngman - KJA Advocate for WWW.VINILEMANIA.NET A jazz guitarist based in the United Kingdom, who displays influences of rock, rockabilly and blues. The My Crazy Pony EP has five tracks and the total length of the recording is just shy of twenty minutes. The liner notes indicate there are only two musicians on the recording; Mr. Young is joined by his brother Richard who handles the drumming duties. All other instruments, bass and synthesizers are taken care of by Neil Young. The CD sound quality is satisfactory, the mix is not great. There are moments when this recording sounds like a practice session. The opening track “Benny Vitamins” starts out with a pleasing guitar sound, a little bit country in a rockabilly manner, with twangy chords and single note runs. The drumming is very bouncy, the sound and groove changes to a more jazz inspired feel during a bridge and after about eight bars returns to the intro with a slightly more refined and flowing rhythm. There is a ballad, aptly entitled “Ballade” a guitar - solo, the sound is a little loose, and there is an open feeling, up until a synthesizer adds some background fill. The song finishes as it starts and smoothly flows into the next track, a similar sounding tune, a guitar solo, with an overdubbed guitar track of rhythm filling in some space, “Time Will Sing” a nice sounding song, a catchy melody, but missing the full sound of a band recorded off the floor. The lead guitar soloing over the song sounds good, nice playing, it just sounds too up front in the mix. The final song of the EP, My Crazy Pony is an upbeat swinging number “I Think Her Name” that has nice jazz guitar licks flowing throughout. The song takes a mellow turn at the midway point where Neil C. Young shows he has some serious potential as a gifted guitarist. |
