Mark Weinstein,
who played trombone early in his career — he worked with Larry
Harlow way back — and was a member of Eddie Palmieri's legendary La
Perfecta band, changed instrument to flute and began recording his
own band variations in the mid nineties. On Con Alma, Weinstein is
joined by pianist
Mark Levine, bassist Santi
Debriano -- who also penned the opening track, the 6/8 "Santi's
Africaleidescope," drummer Mauricio Herrera, and Pedrito Martinez on
congas. There are compositions by Coltrane ("Cresent"), Monk ("Evidence"),
Bobby Hucherson ("Gotcha") and even a track by fellow flautist
Orlando
"Maraca" Valle ("Monte Adentro"). This is a beautiful
piece of work that all Latin jazz listeners will appreciate. With
liner note by Larry Harlow.
