review by Paul J. Youngman - KJA Advocate for VINILEMANIA.NET Saxophonist Gianluca Lusi and guitarist Luigi Masciari are co-leaders on a new CD, Gotha 17. They are joined on this outing by Pietro Iodice (drums), Luca Pirozzi (double bass), Pino Iodice (piano) and Aldo Bassi (trumpet and flugelhorn). The recording is straight ahead jazz with a contemporary sound, while paying tribute to the tradition of bebop. The recording features nine original compositions, five by Masciari, three by Lusi and one by P. Iodice. The songs are well written and the album flows beautifully. The musicianship is strong, the rhythm section is tight and swinging, this is a delightful album and I hope to hear a lot more from the Lusi/Masciari Quartet. The opening track “Symposium” a Masciari composition starts the album off with high energy. It transitions to one of pretty melody and a swinging rhythm section. The saxophone of Lusi leads off and screams with passion. The guitar of Masciari takes the next break. He has a clean electric guitar tone and a distinctive style, playing single note runs with lots of sustain and mixing things up with the occasional harmonic chord. A little more sustain and a lightning flash back to rapid runs, that burn the fret board. Gianluca Lusi has crafted a wonderful tune for saxophone “Teneramente” Italian for tenderly and that is exactly how the tune comes off, with tender loving care. A ballad that features Lusi on soprano and alto saxophone. With smooth phrasing and pleasing tones that warm your heart; Lusi glides through this sweet melody. Aldo Bassi adds to the sonic delight with a very soulful flugelhorn solo. “Ramla Bay” and “Siamo Spiacenti” two compositions by guitarist Masciari are good indicators of the depth of his compositional skills. The “Ramla Bay” tune has a pronounced rhythmic line, the song is played at a rapid tempo and fusion like guitar licks ride the rhythm while the piano playing of Pino Iodice hits Monk like chords as counterpoint, all very exciting and intriguing. The “Siamo Spiacenti” song slows things down, a bluesy ballad with romantic saxophone lines and take your breath away melodic guitar playing. The album Gotha 17 displays many excellent attributes, excellent musicianship, great compositions in a free bop contemporary style, a swinging rhythm section, passionate solos and a synergy that really works well together. It’s great to hear exceptional jazz coming out of Italy. Bravissimo!
