British music man Dean Rudland at the new Fania label has been busy
digging up and reissuing all the obscure Latin albums from the 60s
and early 70s that DJs and collectors have been obsessing over for
the last two decades, and he calls the series “Rare Grooves” – and I
can very highly recommend all of these reissues. What we have here
with the
Latin Blues band is somewhat of a studio concoction, a
fun slice of greasy, freaky young Barrio funk from the tiny Speed
label. Speed was trying to cash in on the Latin Soul youth culture
of the day and attempt to ‘cross over,’ but despite the slightly
contrived nature of the English language numbers, there is something
endearing about cuts that sing about taking trips and getting with “pussycats.”
Luis Aviles and his home boys put out some nice gritty early salsa
here as well (“Hasta Cuando,” “Oye Mi Guaguanco,” “Rumba Con
Guaguanco”), and Louie Ramírez and Bobby Marín are very important to
the overall sound of the recording. The last cut, an 8 minute Latin
jazz workout enigmatically titled “The Cow”, was a favorite of DJ
Symphony Sid, and it’s got some great piano and percussion. In
addition, some heavyweight soul musicians were on the sessions for
the record, including Bernard Purdie, so there is plenty of funk to
be had (indeed, “(I'll Be A) Happy Man” has been sampled and
scratched by beat makers for years).
