Review by Fabrizio Ciccarelli for WWW.VINILEMANIA.NET

Composer and guitarist, Jack Gates publishes a cd for single guitar: 5 are the original compositions, one sixth written with his wife Sharyl (painter of refined sensitivity) and 8 propositions of some of the most significant tracks on the contemporary musical panorama.

Without resorting to effects of any type, we the listener, are invited into its almost live, wide and nearly harmonious atmospheres, marked with melodic voyages that, with coherence, pass from the Brazilian to the Latin, Hispanic to jazz and even to pop (intensive, in such a sense, the execution of "Yesterday"), in line with a stylistic wisdom, that also moves with a great level of agility, he passes from the melodic to the finger-picking, crossing extraordinary pentagrammic lines ("Naima" by Coltrane, "Nardis" by Miles Davis, "Night and Day" by Cole Porter), strange for the skill with which he reveals with a level of un-common mastery of this instrument, creating intense, emotional, yet original moments, spacing with colorful intelligence the style and his sensibility to speed.

It's is a virtuosic and strongly expressive step – so much perhaps that it is sometimes stylistically skipped over- but always elegant and affable, serene and admirable. Jack is an artist of certain conceptual sensitivity, of remarkable talent, brave in facing tracks like "Naima" (indeed interesting the logical thread and the re-reading of their masterpiece by Coltrane!) or "Berimbau" (magnificent evergreen from Baden Powell) in light and in an exemplary way, much more if you bare in mind that it has been produced with just an acoustic guitar using nylon strings....

The more closely executed jazz leads are bought with a greater level of soft savoir faire through acoustical landscapes painted with pastel colors, one could say, a velvet atmosphere with a conscious test of stylistic equilibrium, the fact that Jack has a deep understanding in the traditions of the jazz guitar and, at the same time, a singing sweetheart from the Samba and Bossa Nova, in virtue of its both eclectic and clear musical language, distinguished from a completely natural inclination towards the "acquaintance of the world”.
