review by Bruce Polin - courtesy www.descarga.com Here's a close-to-perfect Latin jazz project produced by the trumpeter player Steve Gluzband. Gluzband knows what he's doing — he has backed Ray Barretto (to whom the project is dedicated), Jimmy Bosch, Nelson Gonzalez and many others giants — and on this tribute to the legendry Charlie Parker he has surrounded himself with top east coast talent. The Hot House players consist of percussionist Gabriel "Chinchilita" Machado, tresero Pablo Moya, bassist Jorge Bringas, and Art Baily on piano. There are guests too, including the great Chico Alvarez whose vocal interpretion of "Everything Happens to Me" is as charming as it gets. Gluzband let's it roll, utilizing the best best aspects of mambo-jazz, bolero, guaguanco, danzón, boogaloo, changüí and a terrific Afro-Cuban 6/8 handing of the gem "I Love Paris." On this special project, maestro Johnny Pacheco has acted as special consultant. It shows. Not to be missed. Very Highly Recommended. (BP, 2008-08-27)
