review by Scott Yanow - courtesy LA Jazz Scene These article is copyright by Myrna Daniels, editor/publisher, LA Jazz Scene. No portion may be reproduced in whole or fragments by any means whatsoever without her express written consent Helene Attia, who lives in Northern California, has a warm sensuous voice and the ability to sing in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. Her music straddles the boundaries between jazz, pop and World Music. On The Eyes Of Love, she is joined by several rhythm sections and such featured guests as flutist Roger Glenn, saxophonist Richard Howell, and Norton Buffalo on harmonica. Ms. Attia wrote nine of the 13 pieces and shows quite a bit of talent and versatility as both a singer and a songwriter. Her humorous verbal interplay with Owen Davis on "The One Who’s Right" and her colorful rendition of "Estate" are among the highlights of this enjoyable set which is definitely for the open-eared due to the wide variety of styles.
