Review by Latin Lady Dj Margarita for WWW.VINILEMANIA.NET It never ceases to amaze me, at how much new music is being produced and introduced to the salsa communities from so many different places from around the globe. This time, its in the form of Grupo Hatuey's Llego El Momento and they bring it to you all the way from Stockholm, Sweden, no less! Here's a bit of history on HATUEY's name.
Hatuey Monument, Baracoa, Cuba. In the 16th century, Hatuey was a powerful Taino Cacique or chieftain, who has since been considered by many as Cuba's first national hero although he was originally from the island of Quisqueya (Domincian Republic). After some success assisting in the Taino resistance in Cuba, Cacique Hatuey was finally captured and sentenced to death. Excerpt from: http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/41/093.html
Shown above is the label of the well known Cuban beer Hatuey. Youll find this same image on Grupo Hatuey's own webpage. I'm not sure exactly how the group decided on this particular name, no doubt they were fearless in undertaking the challenge of creating great traditional, yet modern Cuban music from Sweden. I've stated before that it takes incredible courage to put all that you have out there on the line. But I feel that the most courageous thing one can do is "believe in themselves". Hatuey does just that! Here's a group that has produced several albums prior to this one, and are met with warm, positive and enthusiastic receptions wherever they tour to throughout Europe. On this album, Hatuey will take you beyond Sweden, all the way to Cuba and even to Puerto Rico via a couple of Plenas such as "Salsa de Puerto Rico" the 4th track on the album (that took me back to my days as a youth listening to my Grandmother's and Aunt's music at our family parties), and then again on the last track "Pleneton", which has the extra added touch of Reggaeton to it. You'll also be able to hop over to another island when you listen to the steel drum infused, Caribbean flavor on this album in the form of "Whagga Whagga", track # 7, an upbeat little number with a kind of reggae-conga, rap fusion. If you're the kind of listener or dancer who prefers a lot of variety and the more modern Timba rhythms, as well as some contemporary Cuban influences in today's music, you'll enjoy this project by HATUEY. An Indian Cacique (Chief), a Cuban beer, a journey into the past. Combined, they make for a very nostalgic project, rich with Cuban and Timba flavors, reminiscent of a time this is no longer present, however, very much alive. Tracks include: Llego el momento, De nuevo estas aqui, A donde vas, Salsa de Puerto Rico, Quisiera estar contigo, Cerca de ti, Whagga, Whagga Niña envenenosa, No quiero mas, Un sueño sin final, Pleneton You can listen to some tracks on Hatuey's own site at: http://www.hatuey.info/ or http://www.myspace.com/hatueysweden To purchase Hatuey / Llego el momento visit: http://www.descarga.com http://www.cdlatino.it http://www.musica-latina.de http://www.swedishmusicshop.com http://www.cdon.com http://www.megastore.se http://www.prodland.de
