Review by Dj Michael Peters

This month there is new Cuban music and it is not Timba. Cuba has so much more to offer and this time it is son Cubano. One may immediately think of Buena Vista but its not. Buena Vista was nice and surely made Afro-Cuban music more popular world-wide, but Cuban son can also sound different, more fresh and modern, and it doesn’t necessarily have to come directly from Cuba or Miami. Cubanoson’s founder - pianist Leonel “Papo” Ortega - was born in New Jersey as a child of Cuban immigrants. His musical background is owed in large part to his father and uncle who many years back, actively performed Punto Guajiro (A style of Cuban country music). Papo started playing the guitar/ Tres and went on to classical training at the Piano - this instrument later becoming his passion. At age 15 his career began with a Cuban band named Havana Brass – then in the 80's he began playing piano with a Merengue band (“Conjunto Quisqueyano”). Over the years Papo has played with several musicians that have added to his experience like Roberto Rodriguez, Chico Alvarez, Junior Rivera and Cándido Camero. He adds particular influences by having played with Jose Fajardo's Fajardo y Sus Estrellas (legendary Charanga band) and influenced by Johnny Pacheco. In 2005 he decided, together with other musicians, who he had met and learned from throughout the course of his musical life, to create his own traditional Cuban orchestra. Please refer to the musical concept (on the orchestra’s web page).

Cubanoson unites the “Punto Cubano” and the “Son Montuno” bringing danceable Cuban music to any event, concert or festival. Rather courageously, in the puertoricannish coined/shaped New York, they confidently call themselves: New York' s Cuban orchestra! and that is truly correct: Cubanoson is definitely a dance orchestra and the CD is totally dedicated to the dancers!

Their CD “Recordando A Cuba” pays homage to Cuba. There are affectionate new interpretations of classical Cuban Songs such as Lagrimas Negras in addition to other new compositions like the title track “Recordando A Cuba” . This one is like no other song on the CD - It is driven by Papo's Piano, and the distinct singing inspirations of both Papo Ortega and Ernest “Chico” Alvarez, and Cuba comes alive! – And the Piano solo, that incidentally contains a musical interlude of la (Guantanamera). By the way, the song was composed by Papo's uncle in only 4 minutes. Often ingenious things are the simple ones in life.

The Song Cubanoson, is one descriptive of the music and the orchestra. In this song’s piano solo, you can can clearly hear the classical training of the pianist. The outstanding Lead trumpet of Roberto Rodriguez, typifies the Cuban Son and delivers the sounds of the earlier eras as well as contemporary jazzier sounds, all of this is done beautifully and without effort. In Monsieur José, there is a treat by Ronny Baro, one the Lead singers of Africando, who sings in this song as well. But the great part comes later, particularly the rich trombone solo of Alexis Llerena, what a swing!

There is also another great trombone solo in Que Mala Suerte - a classical composition by Arsenio Rodriguez. I love this one! The arranger on the CD is Manolo Albo, a pioneer of the SAR label of Son legend Roberto Torres. This man knows, what to do to bring Son to a CD, he couldn’t have done it better. The sound is optimal - the CD sounds great and very clear.

Excellent results. No weaknesses, no faults - and 100% Cuban!

Review by Dj Michael Peters

Me encantó ésta!
