ANDY GARCIA AND THE CINESON ALL-STARS

Invited directly by the Master Danilo Lozano and by the Colombian saxophonist Justo Almario, Saturday, I managed in just under 5 hours to do 400km that separate Parma from Spoleto to go to the first of two concerts by Andy Garcia and his band. I was sure that I would be assisting in an event that…well….it has been a day of rich emotions and some really nice surprises that duly merit to be told about here.
At the beginning of the afternoon, whilst I was visiting the beauties of this Umbrian city, I met in the Teatro Romano the master who is Danilo Lozano. Even without having ever had the pleasure of meeting him before, we greeted each other like two old friends that haven’t seen each other for years. It was a lovely chat with Andy Garcia and a few of the band members (Justo Almario, Orestes Vilatò, Luis Conte).
At 6 O’clock, in the enchanting Teatro Nuovo, I assisted to the projection, included in the price of the concert ticket, of a film directed and brilliantly interpreted by Andy Garcia and partnered by the fascinating and great Inès Sastre: “The Lost City”: a story set in the Havana during the period of the Cuban revolution dashed with some splendid music that has prepared the public, myself included, to the evenings concert.
Very intelligent, a “hit” and very welcome this initiative taken by the festivals organisers, presented in an impeccable way by the Artistic Director, Francis Menotti.
At 21:30, with all hail for the fascinating and enchanting Teatro Romano (I century a.c.) with the crowd in their places, the orchestrated band enters:

Carlitos del Puerto – Bass
Joe Rotondi Jr. – Piano
Orestes Vilatò – Timbales
Iris Sandra Cepeda – Vocals and guiro
Andy Garcia – Bongos, Campana and Piano
In around two hours under the musical direction of the Master Danilo Lozano the band have played a total of 14 pieces letting the public experience, with ecstasy and enthusiasm, the divers traditional Cuban rhythms: son, rumba, guajira, salsa, descarga, danzon, comparsa.
It took in a lively way a continuation, one after the other, improvisational, musical acceleration and solos that have really made impossible the aim of describing here the emotions felt during the evening.
I would like to cite only a few of the more known pieces played: “A gozar con mi combo” and “Una descarga a Cachao”, in honour of the Master Israel Lopez Cachao (very dear to Andy and for which he has directed a documentary which is also in projection in these days of the festival). The magnificent exhibition has let us know, although there really wasn’t a need, the exceptional musical quality of the timbalero Orestes Vilatò. “Bemba Colorà” and “Lagrimas Negras” (A Tria Matamoros) have proclaimed the hot and sensual voice of the Cuban singer Iris Sandra Cepeda, in “Rumba al cielo”, as well as the sound of the congas, the voice is heard of Luis Conte and a world-beating solo from the flute of the Master Lozano.
The Columbian Justo Almario on the sax (and in a few pieces the clarinet) and the Cuban Luis Eric Gonzales on the horn have performed improvisations and solos for the whole concert, making absolutely unique every piece played.
Exceptional Carlitos del Puerto on the bass that, half way through the evening has gifted us an unexpected duet with the clarinet of Justo Almario.
And Andy Garcia? Andy Garcia has been, at least in my humble opinion, the real surprise of the evening. Completely able in holding the scene presenting and commenting on every single piece suggested by his band, he has played to the maximum be it percussion (bongos, chime) that of the piano (excellent the interpretation of “Soledad”), alternating with the Master Joe Rotondi Jr, who has demonstrated for the whole evening all of his talents and qualities of a great pianist during the execution of a guajira at the beginning of the evening.
However, that what Andy Garcia has managed to achieve, is a lot more. It’s that of having sent out a passion for this music to the public that was present that, during the execution of the last two pieces (a son and a comparsa), he was on his feet dancing with these fantastic rhythms together with him and all of his band.
At the end of the concert while I was congratulating the Master Lozano for the emotional evening, I noticed Andy Garcia on his knees on the stage intent on taking apart his own instruments…
This Andy Garcia, he really is a great surprise…

Invitato direttamente dal maestro Danilo Lozano e dal sassofonista colombiano Justo Almario, sabato ho percorso in quasi 5 ore di auto gli oltre 400 km che separano Parma da Spoleto per andare al primo dei due concerti di Andy Garcia e la sua Band. Avevo la certezza di assistere ad un grande evento ma… è stata un giornata ricca di emozioni e di piacevoli sorprese che merita di essere raccontata.
Nel primo pomeriggio, mentre stavo visitando insieme a mia figlia Arianna le bellezze artistiche di questa cittadina umbra, ho incontrato nei pressi del Teatro Romano il maestro Danilo Lozano. Pur non avendo avuto mai occasione di conoscerci personalmente ci siamo salutati come due vecchi amici che non si vedevano da tempo e dopo due chiacchere di rito ho avuto il piacere di conoscere Andy Garcia e alcuni componenti della Band (Justo Almario, Orestes Vilatò, Luis Conte).
Alle 18 nell’incantevole Teatro Nuovo ho assistito alla proiezione, compresa nel prezzo del biglietto del concerto, di un film diretto e magistralmente interpretato da Andy Garcia ed affiancato dall’affascinante e bravissima Inès Sastre: “The Lost City”: una storia ambientata ad Havana durante il periodo della rivoluzione cubana scandita da splendide musiche che hanno preparato il pubblico, sottoscritto compreso, al successivo concerto serale.
Veramente intelligente, “azzeccata” e gradita questa iniziativa dell’organizzazione del Festival, proposto in modo impeccabile dal Direttore Artistico Francis Menotti.
Alle 21,30, con tutte le gradinate dell’affascinate ed incantevole Teatro Romano (I secolo a.c.) gremite in ogni ordine di posto, è entrata la Band così composta:

In circa due ore sotto la direzione musicale del maestro Danilo Lozano la Band ha suonato complessivamente 14 brani facendo ascoltare al pubblico, estasiato ed entusiasta, i diversi ritmi tradizionali cubani: son, rumba, guajira, salsa, descarga, danzon, comparsa.
Ha così preso vita un susseguirsi continuo di improvvisazioni, accelerazioni musicali ed assoli che hanno reso veramente impossibile descrivere le emozioni provate nel corso della serata.
Cito solo alcuni tra i brani più conosciuti suonati: “A gozar con mi combo” e “Una descarga a Cachao”, in onore del maestro Israel Lopez Cachao (molto caro ad Andy Garcia e sul quale ha diretto un film documentario anch’esso in proiezione in questi giorni al Festival). La magnifica esibizione ha fatto conoscere, se mai ce ne fosse stato bisogno, le eccezionali qualità musicali del timbalero Oreste Vilatòs. “Bemba Colorà” e “Lagrimas Negras” (Trio Matamoros) hanno esaltato la voce calda e sensuale della cantante cubana Iris Sandra Cepeda; in“Rumba al Cielo” , oltre ai suoni delle congas, si è sentita la voce di Luis Conte e uno strepitoso assolo del flauto del Maestro Lozano.
Il colombiano Justo Almario al sax (in alcuni brani al clarinetto) e il cubano Luis Eric Gonzalez alla tromba hanno eseguito improvvisazioni ed assoli per tutto il concerto, rendendo assolutamente unico ogni singolo brano. Eccezionale Carlitos del Puerto al basso che, a metà serata, ci ha regalato un duetto inaspettato con il clarinetto di Justo Almario.
E Andy Garcia? Andy Garcia è stata, almeno secondo il parere di chi scrive, la vera sorpresa della serata. Abilissimo nel tenere la scena presentando e commentando ogni singolo brano proposto dalla sua Band, ha suonato alla grande sia le percussioni (bongos, campana) che il piano (eccellente la sua interpretazione di “Soledad”), alternandosi con il suo maestro Joe Rotondi Jr, il quale ha dimostrato tutte le sue qualità di grande pianista durante l’esecuzione di un guajira ad inizio serata.
Ma quello che è riuscito a fare Andy Garcia è stato molto di più. E’ quello di avere trasmesso la sua passione per queste musiche al pubblico presente che, durante l’esecuzione degli ultimi due brani (un son ed una comparsa), era in piedi a danzare su questi fantastici ritmi insieme a lui e a tutta la sua Band.
A fine concerto mentre mi stavo congratulando con il maestro Lozano per l’emozionante serata ho notato Andy Garcia inginocchiato sul palco intento a smontare i propri strumenti…
Davvero una bella sorpresa questo Andy Garcia….
