ALFREDITO LINARES - SALSA DE VERDAD (2008)

review by Bruce Polin - courtesy www.descarga.com Now this is cool. Here's a compilation of rare material by the Peruvian pianist, arranger and composer Alfredo Linares who, according to John Child, "...initially made his mark in the early '70s with the quirky hits "Tiahuanaco" and "Mambo Rock" [both included in this compilation - Ed.]. He has made a string of albums as a leader that have become rare collectors items. Linares relocated to Venezuela in the late '70s, where, among other things, he produced an album for Grupo Mango, arranged for Salsa Mayor (Oscar D'León's former band) and Mango's ex-vocalist Joe Ruiz, and made the album Alfredito y sus Estrellas. Linares took-up residence in Colombia in the mid-1980s, where he worked on recordings with Piper Pimienta, Los Del Caney, Conjunto Renacer, Grupo Calima, La Cali Charanga, Lucho Puerto Rico, Conjunto Son del Barrio, Orquesta Matecaña, Daisy and Grupo Los Conquistadores." It's all swanky, driven, and full of fine, fine Latin dance grooves. Highly Recommended. (BP, 2008-01-01)
