review by Rudy Mangual - courtesy Latin Beat Magazine This latest effort by London, England-based pianist/composer Alex Wilson unveils yet another chapter in the saga of international interpreters of Latin jazz. Aventuras (Adventures) as implied, travels through the realm of Latin rhythms and Caribbean flavors in search of new possibilities within the open boundaries of jazz. In the good company of Rey Crespo (bass), Davide Giovannini (drums), Emeris Solis (percussion), Shanti Paul Jayasinha (horns), and Mary Pearce (vocals), they explore the rhythms of "aguabajo" (in the selection by the same name) and "currulao" in the track Currulao Cool (a 6/8 Afro-Colombian rhythm), both from the Pacific Coast regions of Colombia. Featuring the vocals of Mary Pearce are the selections Changes(opening in traditional western jazz influences and evolving into a world beat groove via a bomba drum in the hands of Solis), and Soldier, a war protest song featuring guest Simon Edwards on the marimbula. 0ther favorites include Cascara (an experiment with time forms within Afro-Cuban and salsa rhythms), and Irisi (a percussive jazzy guaguancó).
