review by Paul J. Youngman - KJA Advocate for VINILEMANIA.NET Giulio Risi is a talented keyboard player, composer and leader of a group that is featured on a CD entitled Deep Down Where The Heart Beats No More. The CD is comprised of eleven tracks of which nine are Risi compositions. His compositions are varied. He mixes musical genres. Latin in a style reminiscent of Flamenco, African, American and European classical are all represented. There is a tinge of funk and a prog rock feel that touches on jazz fusion. The song “La Fata” by E. Bennato is one of the highlight tunes. A piano introduction by Risi with the band joining in on a jazz fusion groove. A stop and start pattern, a catchy rhythm and a terrific melody. The soprano saxophone is up front and singing in a mellow tone. Another song that cooks is “Just To Let You Know” a Risi composition that gets down and swings hard. The opening track “Aria” sounds like a tune from a musical – an African theme with a choir singing the introduction. A joyful melody carries the song, the choir joins in for a couple of verses. The piano sets the tone and continues in an ostinato pattern. A synthesized wailing builds the excitement to the end. “Walking At The Alhambra” has a Bolero feel to it, there are some palmas, castanets and Flamenco guitar strumming. The Flamenco influence comes out strongly in high energy fire and passion. The song “Pay Me Peanuts (But Let Me Play)” is a fun song with big band arrangements and dynamite power. The song bridges to a progressive rock opera stanza that takes it in an odd direction. A short diversion in improvisation before the band gets it back together and returns to the heavy hitting arrangements and the grand finale. And from song to song, eleven tunes in all, jumping from genre to genre, never settling into a groove. The listener never gets a chance to enjoy one flavour. There are some twists and turns along the way, “Piano & Bit / Il Cuore Il Fiore” has a spoken word verse on top of a funky hip-hop beat that is introduced to a beautiful melody that could be accompaniment to a melancholy movie. The project is lacking in continuity, there are some wonderful songs presented, and the playing on the songs, top notch. The compositions seem to have been written for a varied amount of projects. The theatre, movie soundtracks, big band, rock opera, jazz fusion or a Flamenco dance troupe could all benefit from some of these songs. Giulio Risi is credited as the producer of Deep Down Where The Heart Beats No More, as well as composer, arranger, director and keyboard player. Just one hat too many.
