This third outing from
the groundbreaking New York City-based group AfroMantra (led by
Chilean-Cuban drummer/composer Alejandro "Alex" García) continues
its pursuit of blending rich jazz harmonies with powerful rhythms
and flavors extracted from all the corners of the Americas. The
group skillfully balances original scores by drawing said material
from the Caribbean spectrum of rhythms, as well as from North and
South American traditions and influences. The result is a collection
of colorful compositions, full of stirring inspirations and
spiritual creativity. García, who produced the project for his own
indie label (AfroMantra Records), wrote all of the compositions and
arrangements. AfroMantra is comprised of Ole Mathisen (sax), Pablo
Vergara (piano), Watdo Chávez (bass), Aryam Vázquez (percussion),
and Alex García (drums/timbal), all exceptional musicians. The
special, dynamic moments are many, with the standouts being the
title track (The Uplifting Spirit of Our Soul), as well as Yemayá/Goddess
of the Sea, and Canción Latinoamericana.
