Jazz from Mars for Elliott Caine...

The sound of Elliott Caine is a multi-ethnic sound that takes it’s inspiration from all around the world reinterpreting it in a Jazz setting...
It has frightened me reading the biography of Elliott Caine... First level Jazz experience with artists like Larance Marable. Experience with rock artists such as The Beastie Boys and Beck. Experience from around the world, even from Turkey! And you can hear it... Try and dissect the new “Blues from Mars” CD and you will obtain an exalting pass from the earth and the best of its music.
EG: Who makes up the Elliott Caine band?
EC: “My group changes personnel often. It depends on the availability of the musicians. Still the physical nucleus is made up of, myself on trumpet, Carl Randal on Tenor Sax, John Rangel on the piano, Bill Markus on the bass, Kenny Elliott on the drums and also Justo Almario who plays the sax with the group.”
EG: When did you form the band?
EC: “In around 1995, but we have had some different changes since the beginning.” Did you want to tell us anything about some of the early days of the group? “I hired musicians that played with other groups and that had been recommended to me. We recorded our first demo and then we started with the signing on for the live scene in Los Angeles.”
EG: A quick run down of the previous discographies you have been involved with?
EC: “I have worked sessions and back up for many other diverse groups. Principally with a Ska-Latino group that was called “Jump with Joey”. I also recorded Acid Jazz with “The Solsonics”, and another group, which was called “Red Clay”. I also recorded for “The Beastie Boys” but that one was never distributed. I have also worked for “Beck” and the Rock group “Filter”. I also worked other sessions which now I don’t really recall all the particulars. With regards to my group, my first CD “Orientation”, which was distributed in the spring of 1998. Lots of pieces from that CD have been used on a film entitled “Relax...it’s just sex” benefitting from an international distribution. That CD has been played on air and on many radio stations; it also generated some concerts in many musical festivals. The second CD: “Le Supercool” has been played by lots of radio stations in much the same way and for this, with my group, we have been able to play Live at Bastia in Corsica during the “Equinoxe Jazz Festival” for 2003 and the “Atlas Music Festival” in Istanbul in Turkey. However, when we arrived in Turkey they told us that the festival had been cancelled!! We have played for festivals in California and internationally, in this way many fans have followed our group. All the music on the first 2 discs has been composed by myself.”
EG: What’s your following like?
EC: “It’s difficult to say. It seems that our following of fans has increased. I say this on the amount of post we receive and the number of spectators at our concerts. We have also had some great reviews.”
EG: The important events in your life?
EC: “I love music. Especially the sound from the music label Blue Note from the 50’s and 60’s. Also the Afro-Cubano from those times. Especially the Mongo Santamaria and Tito Puente. I am also very aware of the present political and social situation in the world. The madness of war. The injustices in the world. And also the fight for a better world - for everyone. And then all the usual things, love, marriage/divorce. Basically the highs and lows of life really.”
EG: A few words to introduce “Blues from Mars”?
EC: “What can I say? The inspiration for the title of the first track and the CD comes from the landing of the probe on Mars and from the Sci-Fi films of the 50’s.”
EG: You have a very dynamic and well-structured sound…
EC: “Sure, working with musicians who are in sync and together”
EG: I have heard an influence derived from Miles Davis…
EC: “Miles has been my biggest influence with regards to the trumpet and music in general. For this I think Miles’ music is probably somewhere in my soul. Lee Morgan is another musician who makes me crazy. Incredibly full of feeling, passionate with a touch of both bitter and sweet at the same time. On my first CD I have written a track dedicated to Lee, its entitled “Mysteriouslee”.
EG: There is also a progressive flavour in your music…
EC: “I try to do my best!”
EG: Is there any particular concept in your album?
EC: “There isn’t anything planned. The music simply reflects my musical thoughts over the last few years.”
EG: The mood?
EC: “I like to think I am a very positive person, so I hope that this is reflected in my work! I hope that the listeners receive this positive and joyous aspect of my music.”
EG: The carrying grounds of your new album?
EC: “This is the music from my heart, from my soul! It’s not only a reflex of my musical influences but it’s of my perception of the world and the universe.” Are you satisfied by the feedback? “I have had some really good comments. Interviews with radio DJ’s and music journalists. I’ve been on air on the radio, both in the USA and Internationally. In Italy, the site Vinilemania has selected me as “CD of the week”. It has also been in some various “Top Ten” lists throughout 2006.”
EG: There is a communication in your sound?
EC: “Passion and meaning.”
EG: Plans to play?
EC: “I hope! Various festivals are interested in my group. Now I just have to be patient and see what happens. All the agents and organisers or anyone that is interested in my group can contact me via our website: www.elliottcaine.com ”
EG: Your philosophy on life?
EC: “Love life, humanity and the universe. Try and make it better.”
EG: The future of the band?
EC: “I would like to musically grow and continue to record and play live.”
EG: Any famous last words?
EC: “I’d like to tour with my group, see the world and get to know new people.”

Mi sono messo paura a leggere la biografia di Elliott Caine... Esperienze di primo livello in campo Jazz con artisti come Larance Marable. Esperienze con artisti rock come Beastie Boys e beck. Esperienze in giro per il mondo, persino in Turchia! E si sente... Provate a sezionare il suo nuovo CD "Blues from Mars" ed otterrete un esaltante periplo della terra a suono di musica.
EG: Chi fa parte della band di Elliott Caine?
EC: "Il mio gruppo cambia spesso personale. Dipende dalla disponibilita` dei musicisti. Ma il nucleo fisso del gruppo e` composto da: io stesso alla Tromba, Carl Randal al sax Tenore, John Rangel al Piano, Bill Markus al Basso, Kenny Elliott alla batteria e anche Justo Almario suona il Sax con il gruppo."
EG: Quando hai fondato la band?
EC: "Nel 1995 circa, ma abbiamo avuto diversi cambiamenti dall'inizio."
EG: Ci vuoi parlare dei primissimi istanti di vita del gruppo?
EC: "Ho ingaggiato musicisti che suonavano con altri gruppi che mi sono stati raccomandati. Abbiamo registrato un primo Demo e abbiamo cominciato con degli ingaggi dal vivo a Los Angeles."
EG: Una veloce carellata sulle precedenti produzioni discografiche?
EC: "Ho lavorato come turnista e spalla con diversi altri gruppi, principalmente con un gruppo di Ska-Latino che si chiama "Jump with Joey". Ho anche registrato dell'Acid Jazz con i "The Solsonics", e un altro gruppo che si chiama "Red Clay". Ho anche registrato per i "Beastie Boys" ma quel pezzo non e` mai stato distribuito. Ho anche lavorato per "Beck" eil gruppo Rock "Filter". Molte altre sessions di cui ora non ricordo molto piu` i particolari. Per quanto riguarda il mio gruppo, il milo primo CD, "Orientation", e` stato distribuito la primavera del 1998. Molti pezzi da quel CD sono stati utilizzati per un film dal titolo: "Relax...it's just sex" con distribuzione internazionale. Quel CD e` stato mandato in onda da molte radio, cio` ha generato concerti in molti festival musicali. Il secondo CD: "Le Supercool" e` stato suonato da molte radio cosi` e` che, con il mio gruppo, abbiamo potuto suonare Live a Bastia in Corsica nel corso del "Equinoxe Jazz Festival" del 2003 e del " Atlas Music festival" di Istanbul, Turchia. Pero` quando siamo arrivati in Turchia ci hanno detto che il Festival e` stato annullato!! Abbiamo suonato per dei festival in California e internazionalmente cosi molti fans hanno seguito il nostro gruppo. Tutte le musiche dei 2 primi CD sono di mia composizione."
EG: Qual'è il tuo seguito?
EC: "E` difficile a dirsi. Sembra che il nostro seguito di fans sia aumentato. Mi baso sulla posta che riceviamo e il numero degli spettatori ai nostri concerti. Abbiamo avuto anche delle buonissime recensioni."
EG: I più importanti eventi della tua vita?
EC: "Amo la musica. Specialmente il sound dell'etichetta discografica Blue Note degli anni 50 e 60. E l'Afro-cubano di quei tempi, specialmente i Mongo Santamaria e Tito Puente. Sono anche molto cosciente della presente situazione politica e sociale nel mondo. La follia della guerra e le ingiustizie nel mondo e la lotta per un mondo migliore per tutti. E poi le solite cose, amore, matrimonio/divorzio. Gli alti e bassi della vita insomma."
EG: Alcune parole di introduzione a "Blues from Mars"?
EC: "Cosa potrei dire? L'ispirazione per il titolo del brano principale e del CD viene dall'atterraggio della sonda su Marte e dai film di Fantascienza degli anni 50."
EG: Il sound è dinamico e ben strutturato...
EC: "Certo, lavorando con musicisti con cui ero molto in sintonia."
EG: Ho sentito una influenza derivante da Miles Davis...
EC: "Miles e` stato la mia piu` grande influenza trombettistica e musicale in genere. Quindi penso che la musica di Miles sia nella mia anima da qualche parte. Lee Morgan e` un altro musicsta che mi fa sballare. Incredibilmente pieno di sentimento, appassionato con un po` di dolcezza e amarezza allo stesso tempo. Nel mio primo CD ho scritto un brano dedicato a Lee, dal titolo: "Mysteriouslee"."
EG: C'è anche un sapore progressive nella tua musica...
EC: "Cerco di fare del mio meglio!"
EG: Qualche particolare concept nel tuo album?
EC: "Non c'e` niente di pianificato. La musica riflette semplicemente il mio pensiero musicale degli ultimi anni."
EG: Il mood?
EC: "Mi ritengo una persona molto positiva, quindi spero questo sia riflesso nel mio lavoro! Spero che gli ascoltatori ricevano l'aspetto positivo e gioioso della mia musica."
EG: Le basi portanti del tuo nuovo album?
EC: "Questa e la musica del mio cuore, della mia anima! Non e` solo un riflesso delle mie influenze musicali ma della mia percezione del mondo e dell'universo."
EG: Soddisfatto del feedback?
EC: "Ho avuto dei buonissimi commenti. Interviste radio con dj's e giornalisti musicali. Sono andato in onda su radio, sia negli USA che internazionalmente. In Italia, il sito Vinilemania mi ha selezionato come "CD della settimana". E` stato anche in classifica come "Top Ten" in svariate liste nel 2006."
EG: C'è comunicativa nel tuo sound?
EC: "Passione e significato."
EG: Progetti per suonare?

EC: "Amare la vita, l'umanità e l'universo e cercare di migliorarsi."

EC: "Vorrei andare in tournee col mio gruppo, vedere il mondo e conoscere sempre gente nuova."
