NEW YORK CITY'S CUBAN ORCHESTRA

Papo Ortega’s CUBANOSON, (New York’s Cuban Orchestra), celebrates their 4th Anniversary.

Papo Ortega’s CUBANOSON, (New York’s Cuban Orchestra,) celebrates their 4th anniversary at their next public performance October 30th, 2009. Back for the 3rd time, CUBANOSON will perform at the New Jersey Performance Arts Center, (NJPAC.)
LEONEL PAPO ORTEGA AND HIS CUBANOSON

After playing piano for over 30 years for various Latin bands, in 2005, Papo Ortega created his own orchestra known as Papo Ortega’s CUBANOSON, (New York’s Cuban Orchestra.) This orchestra performs traditional Cuban music in their interpretation of Cuba’s Son Montuno integrating various instruments and adding a flavor of New York style Salsa while maintaining their Cuban roots. Papo says: “I want to thank all of you who have been with us from the beginning, to those who are just getting to know us, and those we haven’t even met yet that will soon discover traditional Cuban music as interpreted by this pianist and his orchestra. Since 2005, the members of this orchestra have been a great extended family and I want to thank all of the musicians who have performed and continue to perform with us. CUBANOSON would not be where it is today had it not been for all of you. I would also like to give special thanks to Ed & Cari Castañeda of www.HavanaNewYork.com for their incredible promotion of Cuban events, and specifically for all of the work and support they have given CUBANOSON.”

CUBANOSON has been featured at NJPAC, the West Gate Lounge, Westchester’s Emelin Theatre, Union City’s Park Theatre, UNIVISION TV, XM Satellite Radio, Music Choice Channel, Club Winner Circle in Westbury, NY, numerous festivals and events including performing most recently at the NY Hilton at the 9th Annual New York’s Salsa Congress opening the congress for the legendary pianist Eddie Palmieri.

What’s new for Cubanoson? Rosa Romero, Cubanoson’s stage and production manager states, “We have just produced two song videos for our 4th anniversary, to be released on the web on the orchestra’s anniversary day, (October 30th, 2009.) The two music videos are of two of the most popular songs from their debut CD, “Recordando A Cuba.” The two selections are “Cubanoson” and “Recordando A Cuba.” Both of these songs, written by the orchestra’s leader Papo Ortega and have been on numerous playlists around the world including CD compilations in England and Italy.”

In Cubanoson’s song videos, produced by Guido Diaz of Skylight Studios in Union, NJ, CUBANOSON features in the brass section their lead trumpet and musical director, Roberto Rodriguez Jr., Trombonist Jose “Leonardo” Freire, and Trumpeter Guido Gonzalez; in the string section, tres guitarist, Junior Rivera, and bassist Willie Cintron, on percussion Jaime Figueroa and Larry Figueredo, on vocals Jorge “Papito” Sanchez and Orlando “El Nino” Espinosa, and the orchestra’s leader, lead vocalist and pianist, Leonel “Papo” Ortega. You can see these fine musicians on October 30th, 2009 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, (NJPAC,) www.njpac.org. This is CUBANOSON’s third appearance at this great venue, and as a side note, Cubanoson sold out this event the past two years.

Papo, what were the most memorable moments of these past four years? “There have been so many great moments. For example, these are but a few legends that have sat in with the band live: Cachao, Joseito Mateo, Chocolate Armenteros, Marcelino Valdes, Lalo Rodriguez, Luisito Quintero (who also recorded on our debut CD (“Recordando A Cuba”) to name a few. Over the years, we have had the opportunity to open for several great stars including, Paquito D’Rivera, Brenda K. Starr, Spanish Harlem, Tito Puente Orchestra, Milly Quesada, Johnny Ventura and most recently Eddie Palmieri.”

When asked about future recordings, Papo Ortega states, “We are back in the studio recording our next CD. Like our debut CD, our goal is to make every song danceable and enjoyable to dancers and listeners. This new CD will be completed by the end of 2009, beginning of 2010, and hopefully we can get it out worldwide and submit it to the Latin Grammy’s for 2010. Incidentally, our debut CD, “Recordando A Cuba,” made it to the 2007 Final Entry List in 12 categories.”

In closing, Papo says, thank you to all of Cubanoson’s Musicians and to the many Djs, Radio Hosts, Promoters, Event Planners, Friends, Family and Supporters for their continuing success. “We hope to see you at our next event and if you are hosting one - let us make your next event an even better one.”

EDDIE PALMIERI Y LA PERFECTA

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts begins its exciting Fall Season with a not-to-be-missed concert, as nine-time GRAMMY® Award winner EDDIE PALMIERI, Latin music’s most influential artist for over four decades, brings his legendary orchestra plus invited, world-renowned guests, conguero GIOVANNI HIDALGO, saxophonist DAVID SÁNCHEZ, and celebrated salsero ISSAC DELGADO, who sings with Palmieri for the very first time on Lehman’s stage on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 8pm. Palmieri has been called “The Sun of Latin Music,” the title of his 1975 album, winner of the first-ever GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Album. His hits include “Azucar pa’ ti”, “Muñeca,” “Café” and “Si hecho pa’ lante.” Opening the show will be THE LATIN JAZZ ALL-STARS, with musical director Papo Vásquez, Dave Valentín, Andy González, Piro Rodríguez, and Anthony Carillo, with special guests Giovanni Hidalgo and David Sánchez.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is on the campus of Lehman College at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468. Tickets for EDDIE PALMIERI IN CONCERT on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 8pm, are: $55, $50, $45 and $40 and can be purchased by calling the Lehman Center box office at 718.960.8833 (Mon. through Fri., 10am–5pm, Tues. 10am-7pm, and beginning at 12 noon on the day of the concert), or through 24-hour online access at www.LehmanCenter.org. Lehman Center is accessible by #4 or D train to Bedford Park Blvd. and is off the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Major Deegan Expressway. Free on-site parking is available.

Eddie Palmieri, the Spanish Harlem-born leader of salsa and Latin jazz orchestras and one of the foremost Latin pianists of all time, revolutionized the sound of Latin music. Starting piano studies at an early age, he began his career as a pianist in the ‘50s with Eddie Forrester’s Orchestra. He spent a year with Tito Rodriguez before forming the legendary Conjunto La Perfecta in 1961. With an infectious sound, Palmieri’s band soon joined the ranks of Machito, Tito Rodriguez and other major orchestras of the day. Palmieri’s discography includes 36 titles, of which nine have received GRAMMY® Awards, including Best Latin Album awards for The Sun of Latin Music (1975), Unfinished Masterpiece (1976), Palo Pa' Rumba (1984), Solito (1985) and La Verdad (1987). In 1988, the Smithsonian recorded two of Palmieri's performances for its catalog of the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. He received both a GRAMMY Award and a Latin GRAMMY for Obra Maestra/Masterpiece (2000) with Tito Puente and GRAMMYs for Best Latin Jazz Album for Listen Here! (2006) and Simpatico (2007), a collaborative effort with trumpet master Brian Lynch.

Issac Delgado, called by The New York Times “one of the greatest singers in the world regardless of genre,” was born into a musical family in Havana and began his career in a band called Proyecto with pianist/composer Gonzalo Rubalcaba. He joined N. G. La Banda, whose 1992 release En la Calle, with #1 world beat hit, “Necesito Una Amiga,” attracted large audiences in Europe, Japan and the U.S. Forming his own orchestra In 1991, Delgado signed with RMM in 1995 and released his first U.S. CD, El Año Que Viene, which included the hit "Si Me Miras A Los Ojos.” Delgado has 17 albums and five Latin GRAMMY nominations. 2007’s La Calle release, En Primera Plana garnered three GRAMMY nominations. He has performed at distinguished festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe. His 2009 release Asi Soy distinguishes his fine vocals as well as his skills as a music director, composer and producer.

Giovanni Hidalgo is considered one of the greatest congueros of our time. The Puerto Rican percussionist began playing at age five on a set of congas handcrafted by his father, the great José “Mañengue” Hidalgo, and became popular outside Puerto Rico in the early ‘80s. He performed with Eddie Palmieri in New York and forged a life-long friendship with Dizzy Gillespie, touring in 1988 with Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra. He also toured extensively with Tito Puente and has performed with Paquito D’Rivera and Carlos Santana.

David Sánchez began playing drums at age eight in his native Puerto Rico before migrating to saxophone four years later. In 1988 he won a music scholarship to Rutgers University and soon began performing with Eddie Palmieri and Claudio Roditi. In 1991 he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s “Live the Future” tour. Sánchez’s acclaimed 1995 debut for Columbia, The Departure, was followed by tours with Kenny Barron, Roy Hayes, and Elvin Jones. With four GRAMMY nominations, Sánchez won a Latin GRAMMY for his 2004 album Coral. His latest and eighth album, 2008’s Cultural Survival, features his mammoth Chamber Music America commission “La Leyenda del Cañaveral.”

Lehman Center receives support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York Daily News, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

  ROBERT NAVARRO - CAMINANDO (CD-2009)

Robert Navarro was born in New York City where he started his career as a pianist, arranger, producer, and therapeutic recreation specialist.  Robert graduated from City College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Music.  Robert attended Manners College of Music (Extension Division for Jazz Studies), and Manhattan School of Music (Classical Studies) during his undergraduate years.  He later received a Master of Arts (MA) from New York University.

USAWILSON "CHEMBO" CORNIELUSA

PERCUSSIONIST, BANDLEADER

Final Liner notes for “Things I Wanted To Do”: WILSON "CHEMBO" CORNIEL Rare is the percussionist who can play with the authoritative control illustrated by this young giant. His masterful technique and skill as a leader have been greatly emphasized by his three previous productions, while his credits as a stable and reliable sideman are a virtual encyclopedia. Staying very much in the here and now, Chembo (the leader) once again comes to the fore, as he takes pride in presenting his latest musical endeavor, "Things I Wanted To Do" (a great title by the way, for a recording by someone that has practically done it all). Even the slower paced tunes have that certain edge; a certain soulfulness and dedication to the art form and an ineffable, enchanting quality that is quite present throughout this production, and which might best be encapsulated in a single word, duende. For those of us who have witnessed any of his past performances, well, all the more impressed we are, for Chembo is not one to sit back and rest on his laurels, opting instead to build upon that which he has already created, actively pursuing a lifelong dream in bridging the musically rich past with the new and uncharted future. At this point in his career, Chembo (the recording artist) is totally in control of his art (not to mention his financial affairs), and is quite intent on staying in the game, pushing his limits each and every time he steps up to the plate, meeting the many challenges of a constantly changing market, and making a new statement with every project that he gets involved with. To some, this type of high stakes diversity can be suicidal, but for Chembo (the warrior), it's par for the course. Win some, lose some, but play the game he will, and what he ultimately brings to the table is an all encompassing view of what modern Latin jazz should be. The days of simple jazz overtones floating over the old ballroom dance rhythms are over, and Chembo (the visionary) knows this all too well. As he has so often illustrated in the past, Chembo (the innovator) unequivocally refuses to allow any restrictions to infringe upon the complete and total offertory of candid and exhilarating jazz, issuing forth his craft with great determination, with a complete and definite brilliance that is his alone. My first encounter with him in the studio was when we both recorded with Andrea Brachfeld, and I've admired his zeal ever since. He is one of those talented artists whose skills by far surpass his fame, and as a result he is quite modest for it. As a percussionist, he is able to fluctuate between the many distinct Caribbean folkloric styles, the very modal and strictly-for-dancing Cuban salsa groove, plus the bluesy and very up-swinging jazz tinged styles that are available in most modern American music; all without losing site of the African element in each, which is why all of these elements, collectively or individually are so dominant in his music. In his tuning, Chembo prefers a peculiarly dry sound, while showing a remarkable ability in transforming harmonical structures and melodic lines into rhythmic patterns and riffs. To be sure, Chembo is first and foremost a drummer, and one helluva soloist at that; yet rock-steady when he has to be. Personal prowess notwithstanding, here is someone who is undeniably a team member, and in such a good understanding with his mates that the result is a most enjoyable combination of moods and sounds, all locked into the whole. A carefully woven tapestry of sounds that can delight the listener as well as the dancer in all of us. "Things I Wanted To Do" would have certainly been less than perfect if drummer Vince Cherico, bassist Carlo Derosa and pianist Elio Villafranca had not all marked the rhythm as assertively and inventively as they did. Saxophonist Ivan Renta is in top form throughout this recording, and no session would be complete without at least a few invited guests.
